THE VANCOUVER SERVICE
SYDNEY GETTING ANXIOUS.
NEW ZEALAND'S PREFERENTIAL
By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.
Sydney, May 23. Mr. llolmax (Acting-State Premier) wrote to Mr. W. M. Hughes (Acting-Federal Prime Minister) declaring that the State Government felt some concern in regard to the matter of the maintenance of a regular servico between Sydney and Vancouver, as the now contract between the Canadian and New Zealand Governments would not oblige the contractors to eend their steamers west of Auckland.
Tho steamers would probably run to Australia, but New Zealand had preference over space.
Apart from tho consideration of money annually expended in connection with tho steamers on wages, coaling, and docking, amounting to £100,000, there was a possibility of jeopardising trade. Ho . urged that Mr. Fisher be communicated with in view of the approaching conference with Sir Wilfrid Laurier.
_ Mr. Hughes replied that the representations would be forwarded to Mr. Fisher.
Mr. Holman states that unless something is done the State will consider the question of contributing sufficient to secure space for New South Wales.
