Titf, exceptionally heavy gales which raged along ill coast of the North Island last week caused numerous floods in the Poverty Bay and Hawke's Bay districts. At Napier, Hastings, and Gisbprne many of the streets were like rivers, and many residents were driven from their homes by the flood waters. Several .photographs showing the extent of the flood at Napier may be found in the illustrated section of the Auckland Wjxkly News, which is published to-day.
Scientists from all the world over have been waiting for the reports of the different parties which journeyed to several of the South Sea Islands to observe the recent eclipse of the sun. An Australian expedition travelled to Vavau, in the Tongan Group, and, reproduced in a combination page of this week's Weekly News, are many photographs, showing the party preparing for the long-expected day.
A charming new portrait of Her Excellency Lady Islington forms tho frontispiece of the issue, while there are also many roccnt current events illustrated, among the most, interesting being the preparations for the forthcoming Coronation Industrial Exhibition at Wellington, Sir John Logan Campbell attending tho opening of the new creche at Auckland, tho Governor laying the foundation-stone of the new nurses' home at the Auckland Hospital, the recent railway accident at Henderson, the Hon. P. McKenzie in-t specting the works on the Sti-atford-Onga-> rue line, turning the first sod of the Gon-ville-Castlecliff tram line, Wanganui, and the Hon. J. Carroll opening a new post office at Tuakau.
A panoramic view of the waterfront of Auckland, showing the whole of the completed portion of the new ferro-concrete Queen-street Wharf, the two huge F .and G sheds (in one of which the Winter Show is being held), the big pontoon which is being built, for the Harbour Board, and the new steamer Rotorua is included in the same illustration.
Many other photographs drawn from all parts of the Dominion, together with an abundance of the best literary matter, make up a journal which cannot find a rival in the southern hemisphere.-
