RECIPROCITY WITH AUSTRALIA.
DR. F. W. WARD'S VIEW.
" Pebsokallt I am a freetrader, and would like to see freetrado between New Zealand and Australia," remarked Dr. F. W. Ward, editor of the Sydney Daily Telegraph, when asked by a Herald representative to express his views on reciprocity between Australia and New Zealand. There was, ho said, very little natural difference between New Zealand and Australia, and labour conditions were practically the same. Ho thought, however, there was not the slightest chanoe of getting freetrade in these protectionist countries. It might be "possible to make some arrangement, but the trouble was that vested interests were likely to be interfered with, and a lot depended on how strong the political pull might be. Personally, Dr. Ward thought it would be a human© thing to come to some arrangement. Owing to drought in Australia, a vast amount of animal suffering and death was entailed. "If we could draw upon New Zealand's stores of produce it would," he said, "be helpful to us, and profitable to the Dominion. In the past those interested preferred that the suffering should be endured rather than make overture to New Zealand."
