COUNTRY GOODS TRAIN SERVICES.
MINISTER'S NEW SCHEME.
[BY TELEGIUrH.— ASSOCIATION'.] Wellington-. Tuesday. The Minister for Railways (Hon. J. A. Millar) intends to bring into operation on May 1 a new system of intermittent goods services for small country stations. At present there is a great deal of waste through small consignments taking up the room in trucks for several days at wayside stations, though a very complete system.of transhipment has been in operation for the purpose of economising in trucks and haulage. Under the new method goods will be delivered and received at the smaller stations twice or thrice weekly, and it is expected that railway users will profit as well as the Kaiiway Department by reason of the reduced liability for demurrage. Tenders are to be called by the Railway Department for ten more engines of the Class A four-cylindered balanced compound type, such as have proved of great utility for fast goods and passenger trains. Ten engines of the Class B ("Simple" engines) with tenders, are being put in hand at Addington, and a similar number of tank engines of the improved WO type are being built at the Hillside railway workshops. /
