POLICE COURT NEWS.
THEFT OF A PURSE.
At the Police Court yesterday morning, before Messrs. 'M. J. Coyle, W. H. Cooper, and G. Davis, J.P.'s, a young man named John WLlkie pleaded guilty to the theft of a purse, containing money and a gold ring, of the total value of £2. The purse was stolen from a room mate in a boardinghouse. Accused was convicted, and ordered to com© up for sentence when called upon, and to report himself at regular intervals to the police. ALLEGED CARGO BROACHING. Walter Armstrong was charged with stealing a pair of boots, valued at £1, the property of Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co., from a vessel now lying in port. He was remanded until Friday, bail being allowed, in two sureties of £25. A DESERTER. A young man named Frederick J. Jenkins "pleaded guilty to deserting from H.M.S. Cambrian, He was reman/led, and ordered to bo placed on the first British warship arriving in port. INTEMPERANCE. ■ A number of first offenders were dealt with, tlirco being lined 5s and costs, one being convicted and discharged, and another forfeiting the amount of his bail (20s). Thos. Hayes, an old age pensioner, was dismissed with a • caution. Another inebriate, who was bordering on delirium tremens, was remanded for medical treatment. . .... ■ .. ~-■. ' MISCELLANEOUS. Three carters Peter McLaren, Alfred Weaver, and James Cowsill (Mr. Quinn) — were charged with leaving their vehicles unattended in Manukau Road, Newmarket. The men gave evidence, stating that they chained the wheels, and went into a hotel in search of refreshment. They denied that they left the vehicles standing for any undue length of time, as alleged by the prosecution. The Bench expressed the opinion that the men were entitled to leave their carts temporarily and go for refreshment. The case was dismissed. : ,:. ,• *
A young man named Chas. Henry Fish, arrested by Detective Powell, was remanded to appear at Wellington on a cliargo of having stolen the sum of £3 7s 6d from Sydney Cole.
' Georgo Richard, a young man, appeared to answer a charge of having attempted to take his own life. A remand for eight days was granted.
John MeKendrick, a hawker, was convicted and fined 10s and costs for allowing his barrow to stand in Queen-street longer than was necessary to serve a customer. For the same offence Jesse Earp was fined 5e and costs, and Wm. Shittlehouso Is and 7s costs.
Robert McMillan, who boarded a moving tramcar, was fined-2s 6d and -costs. :
