A FIGHT WITH FLAMES.
BUSH FIRE OUT OF HAND.
[by TELEGRAPH, —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Saturday. About a dozen men were engaged yesterday in a strenuous battle with '.the flames at Waimata. The fire originated from the burning-off of about 50 acres of bush on Mr. W. Bell's property. The burn took place on Thursday, but yesterday afternoon smouldering remains were fanned into a blaze by the strong prevailing winds, and the fire spread with great rapidity amongst the fern and long grass, Mr. Bell with several men, together with assistance from Mr. Holden's, had a most trying experience in endeavouring to check the flames The section abuts on to Mr. Holden's homestead towards which the flames spread. By the evening the outbreak was checked, and it was considered everything was safe; but about nine o'clock the fire burst out again, and. men were- engaged until after midnight. Today the position was safe.
