CARNEGIE'S MILLIONS.

New York, January 21. Mr. Andrew Carnegie has given £2,000,000 to the Washington Institute of Research. Mr. Carnegie's total benefactions to this institute now reach £5,000,000.
TWO MILLIONS TO STOP WAR. At Washington last month Mr. Andrew Carnegie transferred to a board of trustees the sum of £2,000,000 in' five per cent, first mortgage bonds,;.- the 'revenue ; of which.is to be used to hasten the abolition of international war and ; establish a lasting world peace. Senator Elihu Root, the permanent . representative of the United States at the Hague Peace Tribunal, is the president of the trustees, who are 24 in number. Phesident Taft has. consented to be hon. president of the foundation. The method by which the annual income of £100,000 shall, be-expended is left by Mr. Carnegie entirely .in the hands of the trustees. The foundation is to be perpetual, and when the establishment of universal peace is attained, the donor provides that the revenue shall be devoted to the banishment of the "next most degrading evil or evils," the suppression. of which would "most advance the progress, elevation, and happiness of man."
