London December 16. It is more than" five years since Mr. A. D. Lubecki was in New Zealand. He is now paving a round of farewell visits prior to sailing at the end of this month by the P. and 0. steamer Macedonia, which goes direct to Auckland.
Mr. A. F. Wilding has entered for the Monte Carlo tennis tournament, which is to open early next month, and which will bring together the most noted players in Europe, as well as a good detachment from the United States. _
A series of "British Dominion" lectures is being delivered this winter at the U.mversitv of Birmingham. New Zealand[was the subject, last Thursday, the Hon. W. Pember Reeves told of the rise and progress of the" Dominion before a largo audience. He was successful-in. making his lecture informing and at the same time entertaining. ;On the proposition of Dr. Gore, Bishop of Birmingham, a cordial vote of thanks was passed! to- the lecturer.
Mr. I. W. Raymond (Invercargill) has returned with "his wife and family... from Carlisle, where he put up a record as the Unionist candidate in the election. With only 6500 votes to work upon. Mr. Raymond reduced a hostile majority of 1200 in January to 64, an acluevement which is regarded in party 'circles as, practically tho best of the campaign. :. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond have now settled down again at Wimbledon. , . - •,"

'-':■..:-■■". -Dr.. Chappie lost no time on ' arrival in. ; England. He left at once -for ■, Stirling- .:.; shire, where he has since conducted an active campaign in defence of his seat. He had the enthusiastic support of the local / Liberal party, which is led by Sir John H. IN. Graham, of Larbort-. Polling took V place on Tuesday, and the result was de- - clared ■ the . following day. Although the :- ex-New Zealander did not succeed in ful- ; filling his promised majority of A 000, ho :•■ came out victorious over hie Conservative '■•--- opponent *to the extent of 2696. Dr. - ' Chappie polled 9183 votes; .Mr. R. S. - I Home, 6487.
Sir William Russell has been .taking a somewhat active part in' the general elecon campaign, working in the Conservative: interest. When speaking at various meetings he usually confined! himself to Imperial Preference, a "subjecti that he found seemectto " catch on." He passed through town this week.- on his way back from ; Devonshire, where he had been making a couple of speeches in the interest of Colonel Burn, who was Conservative candidate for Torquay, and who.. succeeded in capturing the seat from the Liberals by a majority of 150. All the meetings were thoroughly patriotic in character, and Sir William - Russell seems to have found his "'experiences of interest.
