New York, January 7. The Supreme Court of the United States has commenced the hearing of , the appeal in the Government's suit for the dissolution of the Tobacco Trust with its subsidiary companies. Proceedings in this suit commenced in 1907. . The Government's case alleges that the trust is an unlawful combination.

CANADA'S POSITION.

Ottawa, January 6.

Canadian shipping companies declare that they are not affected by the United States action against the shipping conference. They hold the view that the proceedings are rather in the nature of an equity suit lor testing the jurisdiction of the United States Government. The United States Government's New York Attorney denies this.
