POLICE COURT NEWS.

A PETTY THEFT.

A man named James Moylan was charged before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., at the Police Court, on Saturday, with stealing a handkerchief, valued at Is 6d, from a member of the crew of the steamer Aparima. The accused had supper with three of the crew at a coffee stall the other night, and when they were walking down the street Moylan suddenly snatched the handkerchief. When arrested by the policeman the article was found in his possession. He was convicted of the offence, but as ho is already serving a sentence of seven days' imprisonment, this offence was included in the sentence.

DRUNKENNESS. On charges of drunkenness, Joseph Fletcher was fined 10s, or 48 hours' imprisonment, and two first offenders were remanded for a week for medical treatment. Denis Tracy, who is .under sentence to spend a few months at liotoroa (lluthe's Island), was convicted and discharged on a charge of procuring liquor while prohibited. . MISCELLANEOUS. Oscar Rolander was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond. It was stated that he went from house to house collecting money, stating that he was taking the money for a woman who was in poor circumstances. He was remanded till Wednesday. A charge of stealing knives valued at 255, was preferred against a youth named William Smith. Ho was remanded till Wednesday, bail being granted in one surety of £25. Thomas Carpenter and John Davis were charged with deserting from tho steamer Sussex. They were sent back to the ship and ordered to pay costs. Henry Barton was charged with stealing jewellery valued at £19. It was alleged that the theft took place at Rotorua, but as the informant had since left the Dominion, the accused was discharged.
