It is reported that a reduction of one penny per yard will take effect on the railway workmen resuming operations after the holidays. It may be remembered that a mild strike took place a month or so ago, when it was first suggested to lower the rate from eightpence to sevenpence per yard. it. is said that the men will not resist the reduction on this occasion.
; Ideal harvest weather is now being experienced. Oat crops are in many instances in stack. Tho caterpillars caused some damage in several paddocks. The recent drop in,the price of fibre has meant a falling off in flax-cutting operations around here. Maketu once again was thronged with visitors on Boxing Day, when sports were held. A pleasant day's outing was the result,.
