THE ABSENCE OF PEERS.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

(Received January 3, 1 a.m.)

London, January 2.

The Daily Chronicle states that the absence of new peers in the list of New Year honours is a surprise. Their creation has either been deferred till the Coronation, when the large honour list will be published, or reserved until an emergency, possibly necessitating wholesale creation.

Sir William Cullen succeeded Sir B'rederick Darley as Chief Justice of New South Wales about nine months ago. He was for three years a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and a member of the Legislative Council till his elevation to the judgeship.

Sir John Hackett practised as a barrister in New South Wales and Victoria till 1882, when he went to West Australia as editor of the West Australian. He took a prominent part in the Federation movement, being a member of the convention which framed the Commonwealth Constitution. He is a Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of West Australia, and chairman of the University Extension Committee. In 1905 he married a daughter of Mr. Fred. Brockman.'

Sir Thomas Tait, a son of Sir Melbourne 'fait, Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Montreal, Canada, was Chief Railway Commissioner of Victoria till a few months ago, when ho retired. He is still in Australia, but intends shortly to return to Canada.
