FROM THE AUSTRALIAN PAPERS. MR. ROCKEFELLER'S INCOME. The Standard Oil Company of America ha* declared its quarterly dividend '. of 10 per cent. Mr. John D. Rockefeller's income from this great monopoly is computed at 19 'dollars (about £4) a minute. OVER THE WORLD IN A MOTOR. Messrs. Drake and Hanlpn, who, with. a mechanical expert, are making a motor car tour of the world, arrived at San Francisco from Chicago last .week and sailed for Honolulu, whence they continue their journey to. New Zealand. Messrs. Drake and Hanlon will afterwards motor through Australia, India, China, Japan, the Philippines, Africa, Arabia, Turkey,. Persia, and all the British Isles. The party is using a Hupmobile car, and by the time New York is reached it is estimated that a distance of 40,000 miles will have bean covered. > ■ ■ • ■ ■ ' LESE MAJESTE. Five Russian daily newspapers have been confiscated, and are to be prosecuted for lese majeste. The offence of which these papers were guilty was that of having published a speech made by a member of the Duma following certain interpellations regarding the actions of the police on the occasion of the meetings recently held by students to protest again6t the cruelty with which political prisoners, were being treated. POSSIBILITIES OP MEAT TRADE. Mr. Arthur Kidman, the Sydney meat exporter, has been interviewed in New York regarding the possibilities of the meat trade between the United States and Australia. He pointed out that if Congress would abolish the duty on meat imports Australia could supply America with beef and mutton in carcase, landed on. the wharf, at 3d, butter at Is, and lamb at 4d a pound. Mr. Kidman says that Australia is to-day the land of golden opportunity, and is the source to which the United States should logically turn for its beef, mutton, and other produce, which could d© supplied at prices far more satisfactory than those now obtaining. RUSSIA AND INDIA. The plans of Russian capitalists for connecting the railways of Russia and India by means of an international line through Persia are being rapidly developed. It is proposed to take a direct line from Baku, on the Caspian Sea, througa Persia and by way of Seistan, to Mushki, Baluchistan, on the Anglo-Indian system. An estimate places the cost of construction at £9,000,000. SOCIALISM IN AMERICA. Mr. Charles E. Ruesell, one of the foremost of American Socialists, and a wellknown writer, who was a candidate for the Governorship of New York State in the late contest, predicts that the Socialists will be successful at the national elections in lyj.o. He further prophesies that America will have a Socialist President after that year. Mr Russell declares that both the great political parties at present are putrid with corruption.
