EXCAVATING A CITY.
i AN ARABIC POMPEII. By Telegraph.—Tress Association.Copyright. Madrid, December 23. The Spanish Government is excavating Adb-er-Rahman's ancient city of Azzahra, in Andalusia, which was abandoned after being sacked by the Mudarites and Berbers in 1009. The city is described as an Arabic Pompeii. Abd-er-Rahman (Arabic servant of the Merciful One) was born at Damascus in 731, and died in 788. He founded the independent Onimiad Power in Spain, with Cordova as capital. He survived tho massacre of the Chnmiads by the Attassides, took refuge in Mauretania, and was. invited by a party of Arabs in Spain to come to them as their sovereign. He quickly established his power, overcame his chief - artagonist in battle, suppressed several formidable rebellions, and repelled the invasion of Charlemagne. A little over 200 years after his death the city was besieged and destroyed.
