UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. r A meeting of the council of the Auckland University College was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs. G. Peacock© (in the chair), L. J. Bagnall, C. J. Parr, T. WLeys, T. U. Wells, Dr. Bamford, and the Rev. W. Beatty. ' A letter was received from the Prim© Minister with reference* to the council's letter urging upon the Government to undertake the work of boring for coal on tlio council's property at Taupiri, stating that the Government would not do the work, and suggesting that the council should go in for prospecting. It was further stated that there was no spare plant at present available in the Mines Department. The letter was received. A letter was received from the Chamber of Commerce, stating that the Chamber had decided to offer two scholarships of £10 each,, and an annual prize of £5 for the best- thesis on some commercial subject. The offer was accepted with thanks. A suggestion to have a course of lectures given by a professor of music on voice production was adopted. On the motion of Mr. Parr, it was decided that the registrar compile a return of the capital and annual value of the endowments of tho four university colleges of the Dominion. The request from' Professor Brown for the sum of £100 for renewal of laboratory appliances was granted. Ir was pointed out that the new street improvements near the colleyo had left the entrances on one side some feet above the street, with merely _ a narrow ledge as a footpath. The chairman's action, in arranging with the architect to attend to tho matter was approved. It was Beaded to notify the tenants of tho council's sections that unless they clear noxious weeds to the satisfaction of the inspector within one month of» the date when tho notice is served action will bo taken to enforce the provisions of the lease.
