Db- Savage returned from the South yesterday by the Rarawa. • Inspector Cullen returned from a visit to the Waikato and King Country yesterday. Mr. W. Watson, director of the Bank of New Zealand, arrived in Auckland v<?3terdav. He is staying at Glenalvon. Miss Ida Moran, a New Zealand mezzosoprano, made an auspicious debut in Sydney last week, before a crowded house, at one of the leading concert halls of the city. The recital was given by Miss Moran herself, who sang a long programme, including the beautiful aria, "Ah! se tu dormi," from the version of '• Romeo and Juliet" by Vaccaj: Mozart's charming " Non so piu," from " Le Ncuze di Figaro;" "She Wandered Down the • Mountain Side;" selections from Liza Lehmann'a " Life of a Rose;" Tschaikowsky *' Nay, Though My Heart Should Break," and other charming songs, amongst these being several encore numbers. The young singer had a very gratifying reception, a double encore following her first item. The newspaper critics all praise the quality of Miss Moran's voice. Miss Moran, who hails from Auckland, went as a, chi-;d to Wellington, where she was a pupil at St. Francis Xavier's Academy. She went to Sydney three or four years ago, with her relatives, and began her musical training there. For the 18 montlvs sb.thas been taught singing by Signor Steffanij •who trained Madame Esta d'jVrgo and Madame Florence Schmidt, artists who have since gained distinction in Europe.
