ROWING.

WEST END CLUB. The West End Rowing Club will hold subscription trial fours on Saturday next, and members will note that entries for these close at tho boathous© to-day. The crews for these "fours" will lie drawn by the appointed strokes, instead of being picked by the Selection Committee, the club's usual practice. It is tho intention of the Management Committee to hold " trials" as frequently during the season as tides and other circumstances will permit/

NORTH SHORE CLUB'S "AT HOME." The opening of the rowing season will be celebrated to-day at. North Shore by the holding; of an "At Homo for members and guests, and "president's fours" 1 (for trophies presented by Mr. W. Swinnerton). The committee has rnado full arrangements for the function, a string band having been engaged, and a ladies' committee will dispense afternoon tea to the guests- The " fours" will be- rowed over the No. 3 course, starting off the Torpedo Wharf and finishing off Magazine Rock. This is a long row for the opening of the season.

AUCKLAND CLUB RACES. The Auckland Rowing Club will hold a series of _ four-oared races this afternoon for trophies presented by the president, Mr. Wm. Coleman. • A large entry has been received, and some good rowing is anticipated. The club especially invites supporters and ex-members of the club to bo present. The Waitemata Boating Club will open the season next Saturday by holding trial fours for trophies presented by Mr. Ellerbeck. 1 H. Pearce and W. Fogwell will leave Sydney for New Zealand to-day, and 'co straight to Wellington. The raco with W. Webb has now been fixed for Boxing Day. Referring to tho departure of the men, -the Sydney Mail says;—lf Pearce ia successful he will keep in condition with a view to other matches. It Is also understood that Fog-well would like another race with G. Whelch for the championship of New Zealand; but he is not in any hurry about this, and would return to Sydney with Pearce, so as to take part in a proposed wrullmg handicap on the Parramatta in February. Some New Zealanders think another Armt has been found; in a man 113 mod Jackson. Ready-made . champions are not plentiful, but we have had a few here, including such men as W. Hickev. M. Rush, W. Beach, H. Searhs, and J. "Stanbury. As a rule a man is little more than 11 novice for three years. What is wanted just now- is big men, who can be backed and otherwise financed. Then there would to money in the game. After all, it is the backers who make it possible for a man to become a champion. ' .• ■ LTSX.
