LAWN TENNIS.

FIXTURES. November 26—First Round of Inter-club Matches. With the exception of Mount Albert, which opens this afternoon, play at all the city and suburban clubs is now in full swing. As anticipated, the challenge match between Auckland and Devonport resulted in a very close and interesting contest, the former getting the verdict by securing the greater number of games. The defeat of Devonport's ladies' A doubles (Mrs. Cooper and Miss Harvey) by Mrs. Allen and Miss Woodroffe came as a big surprise. I think this was only the second occasion on which tho crack Shore pair have ever been beaten in inter-club matches. They were defeated last season by Misses Udy and P. Gorrie (Eden and Epsom) two sets to one. The second grade competition between Devonport, Remuera, Onehunga, and Mount Albert ought to provide plenty of interest. The first-named three are very even, and Mount Albert is quite capable of making its presence felt. Remuera-, by the way, has probably more courts than any other club in the Dominion. A full membership and nine courts is a very satisfactory position for any club to be in. No doubt the association's executive will have its eyes on the suburban courts for the forthcoming handicap tournament.' The only drawback at present at Remuera is the want of a largo pavilion. However, the committee has the matter in hand, and during next winter a suitable building will probably be erected. The programme for the West End Club's tournament is posted in the club pavilion. Entries for all events close on tho 19th inst. I understand tho Ponsonby club intends holding an open one-day handicap tournament early next year, probably on Anniversary Day. This is a distinct innovation and should prove to be a success. Through change of residence, West End has lost the services of G. H. Baker, one of its oldest members, he having thrown in his lot with tho Parnell Club. Wilson, who played with West End last season, has joined Auckland. The Parnell team, which) performed so creditably in the inter-club pennant competition last season, is again strong this year. Mrs. Stride, a new member, should strengthen the ladies' team.
