ENCOURAGING IMMIGRATION. Melbourne, November 11. -- As a result of the McKeozie-Mead mis* sion to England, nearly 3000 settlers arec expected before May next. '[ Sydney, November 1L A deputation of the British Immigration League urged Mr. McGowen to take action to encourage immigration. The Premier, without committing himself, declared no one was more anxious to settle the people in the interior of the State than the Government. ■ ~

SUBMARINE DISTURBANCE. Sidney, November 11. [ The officer in charge of the Obsisrvatory - reports that Wednesday's earth tremors ': lasted from seven minutes 'past four till ■ v ; ; eight o'clock. The tremors were very,-,3i numerous. The principal portion of the - disturbance commenced at 4.14, and for four minutes the pendulum was swinging quite beyond the limits of the sensitised paper After the lapse of a few minutes more large waves, up to six and a-hal£ ;;■:•.. millimetres amplitude were recorded. The epicentrum was probably within 2000 ,;. miles of Sydney, and the disturbance was y undoubtedly a great ■ submarine one. Early on Wednesday morning a small but ; .;; pronounced 'quake was recorded. The -—- Adelaide Observatory reports a similar •quake, by far the largest ever recorded there.
