POLICE COURT NEWS.
"NO USE TO THE COMMUNITY."
" You are of no use to the community or to yourself," remarked Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday to an old man who was charged with being an incorrigible rogue and with soliciting alms in a public place. In order that the accused might be relieved from having to beg for his living he was sent to gaol for twelve months. Vernon Green, lame and without the use of one of his hands, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he was found wandering round a warehouse in the early morning. ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. Marcus Barak some time ago conducted a small jewellery business at Clevedon, and on some days worked at Papakura. Presently he disappeared, and it was alleged he took with him articles entrusted to him. Barak was eventually located at Suva, and was brought back to Auckland. He appeared at the Court to answer charges of obtaining, by false pretences, 15s in money, a gold watch, valued at £4, and jewellery valued at £2 10s, and 7s 6d in money. The accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for .trial.'
For his fifth offence of drunkenness during the past six months, and charged further with procuring liquor while prohibited, William Gray was fined £5 or 14 days. Samuel Rait H. Strain, on a charge of drunkenness, was fined £1; and for a similar offence one first offender was fined ss. For being drunk and procuring liquor while prohibited Edward Russell was fined £3 or 14 days; Walter Richard Learv was fined £2 or seven days; and a Maori named Pou Haeata was fined £1 and costs.
"RINGING THE CHANGES."
A young man named Robert Neil, whilst' under the influence of liquor the other evening, entered a number of shops in Newton, and carried out the wellknown practice of " ringing the changes, by which means he obtained five sums ot 9s 6d The accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour.
MISCELLANEOUS. For failing to prevent, a horse . from wandering Harold John Hevvlet was fined 5s and costs. . 4. fine of £2 and costs was imposed on Martin Roberts for leaving a vehicle not under proper control.
