FORTUNE FROM A WRECK.
FIND OF SPANISH GALLEON.
The men at work salving the battleship Montagu, wrecked on Lundy Island four years ago, have had the good fortune to stumble on a Spanish ship which went down off Lundy Island in a terrible gale many years ago.
This discovery means a very considerable haul for the workmen owning the Cornish Salvage Company, which bought the Montagu. The men recovered a number of anchors and heavy iron chains, after which they shattered the old hulk with guncotton. There is much valuable material in the wreck, and the divers will be busy for months. The battleship has put a fortune into the pockets of the salvage men, who gave £4000 for her. During the first year's operations they cleared about £10,000 profit, and there still remains between ten and fifteen thousand tons of the sunken ship. The- Santa Caterina, one of the Spanish Armada, was sunk off the Shutter Rock, where the Montagu struck, but no trace of her has been found.
