CRIPPEN MURDER CASE.
MISS '■■lE. NEVE ACQUITTED. PAPER FINED FOR CONTEMPT. By Telegraph.—Press Association..—Copyright. London, October 25. Ethel Le . Neve -was charged with assisting Crippen to escape, and having - guilty knowledge of his intentions; Mr. F. E. Smith, M.P., her counsel, contended that the prosecution had not proved guilty knowledge and had not called evidence. The jury, after a, brief absence, returned a verdict of not guilty. Mr. Robert Donald, editor of the Daily Chronicle, was charged with contempt of Court in publishing a statement that Crippen had confessed. Mr. Donald proved that he was holiday-making at the time. The Court ifned Mr. Perriss, assistant editor, £200 and costs. Mr. Justice Darling said the publication was calculated to prejudice the trial. It was grave contempt to publish idle gossip. He was not prepared to substitute newspaper trial for trial by jury. .
