"GRINNING LIKE CHESHIRE CATS."
MR. TAYLOR AND THE OFFICERS. [BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Saturday. Somewhat angrily Mr. T. E. Taylor checked himself in a criticism of the Defence Estimates yesterday in the House of Representatives, and protested against some of the higher officers of the Defence Department who were sitting alongside the Speaker's chair, "grinning like Cheshire cats." Mr. J. Allen (Bruce) rose, and asked if Mr. Taylor was in order. Mr. Taylor said a certain amount of respect should be shown to the House. Officers of a public Department were actually sitting there contorting their features, and almost taking part in the debate. They wero misbehaving themselves like schoolboys. Mr. Colvin (Chairman of Committees) ruled that Mr. Taylor must not refer to the officers. Mr. Taylor : I hope it will make them remember their positions and how they should conduct themselves in the Chamber.
