GUNNERS AS HOUSEMAIDS.
AN INDIGNANT MEMBER. (By TELEGRAPH.—speciaI CORRESPONDENT.) Wellington, Friday. Astonishment and indignation were expressed by .Mr. T. E. Taylor in the House of Representatives to-night, at a statement made by the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) to the effect that gunners were employed as servants to staff officers. Mr. Taylor said that if they knew of it, the people would not tolerate gunners acting as maids of all work to staff officers. What right had a gunner to be a domestic servant or housemaid? It was most absurd. The Prime Minister replied that the use of oxen as servants to high officials was world-wide. Mr. Taylor said this was an indignity to the public service. Did these gunners have to pass an exam qualifying themselves for the position of chambermaid? (Laughter). He mqved that one of the items of the Defence Estimates be reduced as an indication that no member of the defence forces should be employed as a servant by any other member of the forces. The amendment was rejected by 51 votes to 13.
