MAORI SCHOOL DESTROYED. "SHROUDED IN MYSTERY." [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Friday. TnK H'iknrere Maori Girls' School was totally destroyed by fire at six o'clock this morning. Tho building (one of 40 rooms) was very old, and the flames spread with great rapidity, giving tho girls barely time to escape in their night attire. The lire broke out in the cloak-room on tho ground floor, but the cause is shrouded in mystery. The cloak-room was locked up last evening, and when the fire was discovered a window was seen to be open. 'Tlio school was a very old landmark, having been established by Dr. Williams, the first Bishop of Waiapu, in 1875. The insurance was £1800 on the building and £400 on the furniture, both in the National. The girls lost everything. DWELLING!!OUSE GUTTED. [ lIV TF.I.KORAPTI. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Hamilton, Friday. The residence of Mr Duncan Eraser, a house, of eight rooms, at Koromatua, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. The owner was away from home at the time, and a man who had been left in charge was busy ploughing in the fields. No cause can bo assigned for the outbreak. The insurances total £-100. WHAT THE HOUSEMAIDS FOUND. [nr TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Glsborne, Friday. About nine o'clock on Wednesday evening one of the liousemaids of the Karaka Hotel, a largo two-storey building, noticed the smell of something burning, and it was discovered that tho linen-press on the second floor of tlie hotel was on fire. On opening the door it was seen that the lire, had a good hold. The maids at once gave tho alarm, and Mr. Stokes's son soon had a gang of willing helpers from the township at work. Web blankets were put over the ceiling, and tho water jugs, which were luckily full, helped to extinguish the tire. The contents of the room, which included live linen, blankets, rugs, towels, etc., wero all destroyed, and the walls and coiling Were badly charred. The hotel had a very narrow escape.
