[BY XEIEGRAPH,—I BESS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Monday. An inquest was held at Hastings to-day concerning the death of a. male child, alleged to be the illegitimate offspring of Maria Mooney, who was arrested on September 16, on a charge of murdering the infant, and has since been too ill "to permit of her attendance at an inquiry. The ■jury returned the following verdict: —(1) That the mother of the newly-born child, the subject of the inquest, was Maria Mooney; (2) that there was not sufficient evidence to prove whether th.? child was oorn dead cr alive.
