LAWN TENNIS.
AUCKLAND V. DEVON PORT. " Dunno Where 'e Are" writes :—"As one of several intending members of either the Auckland or tho Devonport Clubs, may I suggest, in order that we may know before the season begins, which of the two is to stay in the first grade, that the contest to decide the matter be played within the next week or two. The positions which these clubs are to occupy in the grading ought to be defin xl at once, so that those who consider that their play qualifies them for membership of a first-grade club may know whether to join Auckland or Devonport while the membership lists remain open. If the match is deferred they will probably consider it too risky to take an ' evenmonev' chance by joining either of the clubs. If th'.' objection be "raised that neither club's lawns are yet ready for play, I would point out that there are several good asphalt courts, which, I am sure, would be made available for the contest; and it will not, 1 think, be denied that it would be an advantage, rather than a disadvantage, to have the match played on neutral ground. So as to avoid any suspicion of " ringing-in" players for the occasion, it seems to me the fairest way would be to confine the contest to last season's members. I hope my suggestion will be adopted, for we shall then know where we are." BASKETBALL. The final match for the Auckland Basketball Association's second grade championship was played at Remnera on Saturday afternoon, when Edendale beat St. David's after a hard game by 12 points to 10. thus winning the second grade shield for the season.
