WOOD-BLOCK PAVING.
ADOPTED FOR WHARF APPROACH
A letter from the Farmers' Freezing Company was read to the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday protesting againet the proposal to use stone sets in improving the approach to the Railway Wharf on the ground that excessive noise would be occasioned by the passage of heavy traffic over them.
The Works Committee of the Board recommended that no further action be taken in reference to the widening of the roadway approach to the wharf, and that the tender of Mr. G. Niccol, for the formation of the roadway in stone sets, at £3978 10s, be accepted. In the course of a protracted discussion, which ensued, it was stated that tenders had been received for asphalt paving at £3774, and for close wood-block paving at £3319, the maintenance cost for the former being 9d per yard per annum, and for the latter 3d per yard per annum. Members generally opposed stone sets, and resolving in favour of wood-blocking, accepted the tender of Coleeon and Co. for the work at £3319.
