According to Gazette notice. Labour Day (October 12) will be declared a public holiday, and all Government offices will be closed.
The City Fire Brigade received a call about 9 10 last evening to Courtney's corner, at Heme Bay, but on arrival there it proved to have been a false alarm.
The Revs. It. Ferguson and S. A. Goldstein and Mr. S. Weetman have been appointed examiners in the prize essay competition of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
There were 13 person? in the city police cells last evening. Of these, two women, a man. and two children, a boy and a girl, will be charged with vagrancy, while the remaining eight were men arrested for drunkenness.
. A visitor to Hamilton was on Monday night, relieved of some £14 in cash, a lady's gold watch, ring, and wallett. Two men have been arrested in connection with the theft, on one of whom was found a wallet with a name inside.
The receipts collected by the Customs Department in Auckland on Monday amounted to £8485 2e 4d, including £8108 0s 3d from Customs duties. Yesterday's receipts totalled £5898 3s Id, including Customs duties amounting to £5711 19s 6d.
Mr. Stall worthy, M.P., will ask the Act-ing-Minister for Education what steps it is proposed to take to enforce the full time compulsory school attendance of children in those schools which are not under the control of the State or of education boards.
There was a large attendance at the Workingmen's Clnb last night, when Mr. Alfred Jordan, English draughts champion, played 34 games with local players. Mr. Jordan succeeded in winning 29 games, the remaining games being drawn. Those who obtained draws were Messrs. Gerlach, Perrin, W." Sommers, H. E. Norton, and Mawhinney. .
