USE OF WATER POWER.

HARNESSING WAIROA FALLS.

DEPUTATION TO PRIME MINISTER.

[by telegraph.—special correspondent.]

Wellington, Monday. Representation's were made to the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) to-day by a deputation from Whangarei in favour of the harnessing of the Wairoa Falls in order to generate electricity for the supply of Whangarei and Dargaville. The cost of the scheme was estimated at £57,000 and the revenue was estimated at about £2000 per annum. The conditions for the carrying out of the scheme wero very favourable, and there would bo a good market for the power, making the scheme a payable one from the beginning.

The Prime Minister said that it was not possible to give a definite reply until legislation had been passed. Meanwhile he would be very glad to have full information on the subject obtained. He added that it was not intended to allow water powers to be utilised privately. As soon as the Government had authority it would lay down a scheme for the expenditure in all parts of the country.
