THE GOVERNOR'S RESIDENCE.

The news of the decision of the Government to retain Government House, Auckland, as an official residence of the Governor of the Dominion will be received with general satisfaction. It has been an open secret that Lord Islington was in no way in sympathy with the proposal to close the Northern residence, and His Excellency's prompt action in ordering improvements in the grounds indicates that the present Governor, like his predecessors, intends spending a considerable portion of his time among the people of Auckland. It remains for the Government to gracefully make amends for the false step they took in removing the furniture by re-fur-nishing the historical building in keeping with its importance and associations. There can be no question that the decision now arrived at is in accordance with popular feeling, which has been reflected in the activity of the Auckland members who have striven for the retention, for the present Governor and his successors, of the residence intimately associated with the early Government of New Zealand. We hope 3oon to see Lord and Lady Islington in residence at Government House, Auckland.
