A VALUABLE LIBRARY.

EAKLY NEW ■ ZEALAND HISTORY. [BY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington*, Thursday. All New Zealanders interested in the early history of their country ■ have some glad tidings from the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. D. Buddo). ' The Parliamentary Library is to be enriched with an extensive collection of books dealing with the discovery and settlement of New Zealand. The volumes are from the library of the late Mr. Meason, architect, of Christchurch, and were bought by the Government from Mrs. Meason Coates, of London, who: considered that it would be best to have the books returned to the country whose history they contained..;. The assortment includes French works of the 17th and 18th century, and a small book by a writer who accompanied Captain Cook in a voyage round the world. The existence of this volume has escaped notice until recent years. There are several ; works touching • the settlement of the various provinces and the- Minister had intended to offer these books to the principal libraries in the provinces. Unfortunately, however, he now explains that the works are so rare that only four of them are duplicated in the Parliamentary Library, and it is therefore deemed advisable to keep the collection intact in Wellington for the benefit of: future : historians.

Two Petone justices had rather a unique experience the other day. Before sentence was passed on a man brought before them, the offender went down on his knees, and, putting hi* hands together, 'begged to be given a chance, stating that he wanted to go up the country. He emphasised his plea for leniency by saying that if he were let off; on this occasion ne would submit to" being put away for J five long, weary years; if again arrested for ah offence this side of Christmas., "What's the use of coughing when Zymole Trokeys will stop^t? ■; They are pleasing in appearance and taste, thoroughly acrtiscotic, %nd contain -nothing injurious.
