WAIKATO WANTS.

:V. IMPROVED PUBLIC SERVICES. [Bt TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] HtrNTLT, Thursday. Several requests r for } improved public services in the Ngaruawahia/and Huntly districts were made to \ the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) this evening. - , ; ,A deputation consisting of . Messrs. ., H. Marsland (chairman of the Ngaruawahia Town Board) and Thomas Paterson ber of the/ Waikato County Council and chairman of the Kirikiriroa Road Board) urged the need for the speedy construction of a traffic bridge over the Waikato River at Ngaruawahia- Mr. Marsland said that the present combined railway and traffic bridge was closed for a considerable portion of the; day to allow trains to pass. The estimated cost of a new bridge, which would be a- great convenience to those taking milk ; to .the : butter factory, stock , drivers and the public generally, was £6000, and local bodies would probably contribute £3000. If it were found impossible to make such a grant .for a new bridge, a ; lesser amount would erect anew bridge alongside the railway bridge. The Prime Minister promised to refer the matter sto the Minister for Public Works, who would" call for a report. A request for a siding adjacent to the Kirikiriroa Road ; Board's quarry at Taupiri was preferred by /Mr./ Paterson, but the Prime Minister doubted if the request could be granted, ;as : the Department could not construct private sidings out of f>ublic money 'even if the sidings were aleged to be of public use. * Huntly heeds were laid before the Prime Minister by a deputation consisting of Messrs. L. B. Harris, jun. (member ,of the Huntly Town Board) and F. Harris (clerk), which asked if or.: an increase in the post office .The Prime Minister promised to look into the matter. The - deputation also requested that a mail-bag be made up between seven and eight p.m., so that letters could be sorted at Frankton /and taken on to Auckland or Wellington by the .Main Trunk expresses. This would save considerable time in delivery. . Sir Joseph Ward promised to inquire into this matter also. . . : In reply to a request for a telephone exchange, the Premier" said nothing could be done until the minimum number of subscribers had been guaranteed. Mr. Harris complained of the delay in starting the erection of the proposed bridge over the Waikato River at Huntly. In reply it was stated that the subsidy required from local bodies had been reduced from £3000 to £2000, and that the delay, which would be slight, was caused by an' alteration in the plans whereby heavy locomotives could be carried over the bridge.''. , . _ The deputation also asked that the train leaving Frankton Junction for Auckland at 10 a.m. should leave at eight, in order to give people who had only one day to spare more time /in Auckland. Sir Joseph pointed out .that this might inconvenience people further south, but he promised to refer the matter to the Minister for Railways.

. The Question of the Day.— question of to-day. of to-morrow, and of every succeedin" day is, Have you Used Pears' Soap?.-..; If you have not, you have not done your duty by your skin and; complexion. •: If on the other hand—that is, on both hands, and on the face, and on the skin generally— have used Pears. you can feel happy, for you will have done the best that possibly can be done for the skin's health and beauty. There ; can be no question about that. Pears' .has been making beautiful complexions for nearly 120 years.—Pears'. Hatchless for the Comnlexion. - -
