THE MAHENO AND WIRELESS.
'■ .'. . * ~ . —■ —'.;.'..-... The anxiety which was occasioned by the delay in the arrival of the Maheno—happily without serious foundation—', not have been wholly in vain if it assists in educating the country to an appreciation of the value :of "wireless" telegraphy and of the necessity for pressing' forward its universal installation upon passenger ships. ' Until the Government fulfils, its promise to establish "wireless" stations in the North and . South Islands, cooperating with stations in the Commonwealth, •it cannot be expected that shipping companies • will go ; .to the expense of equipping" vessels which would only be'able to call up some accidentally convenient warship. But when the land installations are completed it should be the business, as it is the duty, of the marine authorities and the shipping companies to confer , in order that sensible and practical arrangements for the equipment of ships and the staffing of ship telegraph rooms may be arrived at. The charge of all this must necessarily fall upon travellers, but when spread over enormous numbers the cost to the individual cannot be great, and is one which will be willingly and gratefully met by all who realise the great reduction thus effected in the risk to life; and in the anxiety" of those who have friends and .relatives afloat, particularly '' during stormy weather or in overdue ships.
