CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES ;/ ALLEGED VALUELESS CHEQUE. At the Police Court yesterday, /(before Messrs. A. P. Friend and Geo. Wilkinson, J-P.'s, a young man named Thomas Herbert '; Aitken was . proceeded against on a charge that he did on May 3, at Pahiatua, . obtain the sum of £3 ' by means of (false pretences by drawing a valueless cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Dannevirke.-;.-.- . ("• .': '"-..' ( Chief-Detective Marsack asked for a; remand for eight days in order that accused might be; brought . before . the Court at Pahiatua. Mr. Hackett, who appeared for accused, said he did not object to the remand, but ; asked that reasonable bail might granted. Mr. Marsack stated that the present charge was one of a series that would probably be laid. Accused had , evidently had an idea of absconding. He was staying at a hotel in Auckland under an assumed name, and would ' probably v have been a passenger by the Maheno last evening had he not been ', arrested." DAMAGING. A POUND. / // 1 James Johns was charged with injuring a pound at Morningside by sawing through one of. the rails on April \4. Defendant stated . that his »cow.. had been placed in the pound. Witness noticed that it had its head between the rails and was unable to free itself. He; went home and got a saw and cut the- rail, otherwise he considered the animal would have been injured. ;* Other evidence was given to show that the cow could have freed itself. The Bench said the offence, according to the. Impounding Act, was a serious one, and fined the accused £5 and costs 275. J A HOUSEHOLD SQUABBLE. Albert T. Ramsay was charged, on. two ' informations, with assaulting two'-•'- girls who were boarding at his house. The defendant, it appeared, had informed'" the girls that they would have to go else/ where, arid emphasised his remarks, /it was alleged, by pushing one- of the com-; plainants. In the course of their evidence the girls ■- admitted that they would not have laid the informations if they could have obtained their belongings from the house when they wanted to. The Bench considered that the action should ; not'have been brought before the Court, and accordingly dismissed the case. Mr. Matthews appeared for; the prosecution, and Mr. Moody for the defence. BY-LAW BREACHES. W. Delaney, a hawker, was fined 2s 6d and costs on "a charge of remaining standing in Queen-street longer than was necessary for the . transaction ;of business. >* J. Accused is ; an old offender, this being/his eighth offence within six months. He was sentenced to three/ month's* imprisonment.
