He will take part in "the ordination service at St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell. tomorrow morning. Mr. T. Bristol, of the New Plymouth postal staff, has been transferred to Auckland. Prior to his departure Mr. Bristol was presented with a set of silver-backed hair brushes by his fellow-workmen. Mr. Bristol was well known in New Plymouth swimming circles. Mr. T. Harle Giles. Conciliation Commissioner, who has been suffering from an attack of bronchitis, is progressing favourably towards recovery. His medical adviser considers it inadvisable for him to undertake any work next week, however, and the hotel employees v. licensed victuallers' dispute, set down for hearing on Monday next, has been, consequently postponed until the .- 30th inst. Constable James Maitland, a highlyTespected member of the police force stationed at Devonport, died at the Auckland Hospital on Thursday, after being operated • on last Wednesday for cancer. His remains were buried yesterday in the O'Neil's Point cemetery. Constable" Maitland came to the :■ country* two years ago, while his wife and family of three children, the youngest of whom is 14 years of age, only joined him about eight months ago. An interesting personage at St. Matl.' thew's Church yesterday amongst the uniformed resident veterans of the Veterans* Home was Mr. John F. Purvis, formerly of the Royal Navy, who was born in 1821, , and is now on the eve of his 90th birthday. He took part in the siege of Acre An board H.M. battleship Revenge in 1840, and later on was with the Naval Brigade in the second Maori war of 1864. in the campaigns of Taranaki, Waitara, Waikato, and Tan- ; ranga. At the Gate Pa he was severely \'ii : wounded by -a -bullet wound through the body. Mr. Purvis has three war medals. He relates that he is perfectly happy and comfortable at the Veterans' Home, that he hopes to reach the standard age of his ancestors of 100 years and over.
