The steamer Port Chalmers, from London, after rounding the Cape struck a tidal wave, which crashed over her decks with terrific force, doing great damage. A conference of butter factory managers adopted a resolution strongly in favour of all exported butter being . graded by Government graders without a knowledge of the brands. During extraordinary high tides at Ulla dulla, on the south coast, a few days ago, the water, with startling suddeness, broke ' right over the wharf, doing much damage. The steamer Eden's mooring ropes broke, r and the, vessel, to save herself, had to ' steam out. She had a trying time, and was sometimes almost standing on end. : THE FITZROY EXPLOSION. (Received May 20, 9.10 a.m.) Melbourne, May 20. Charles Shaw was yesterday found guilty of setting fire to the late J. W. Crabtree's shop, in Brunswick-street, Fitzroy, on March 19. Sentence was deferred. . * -. [The fire resulted in an explosion, which, caused the destruction of several shops. Shaw, an assistant, employed by Crabtree, / in a confession to the detectives, alleged that Crabtree, having insured the stock, had removed the greater part of it, from the shop, and arranged some shavings under the staircase, and saturated them with ben-, zine and methylated spirits.
