MEETINGS.

_s» ■ NEWTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The usual monthly meeting of the Newton School Committee was held on Wednesday. The attendance roll for the month was: Newton East, roll number 908, average 850; Newton West, roll number 807, average 669; Grey Lynn, roll number 290, average 258. A letter was received from the Board of Education stating that the Board has accepted Mr. L. McKinstry's tender for the erection of a new brick school building at Grey Lynn. PONSONBY DEBATING SOCIETY. The usual weekly meeting of the Ponsonhy Literary Society was held on Wednesday evening. Mr. McMath (vice-president) occupied the chair. There was a very good attendance of members and supporters. The evening was devoted to a debate, "That prohibition of the liquor traffic is preferable to State control." Mr. it, E. Dowle opened in the affirmative and Mr. L. Phillips championed the negative. The following members spoke to the question Messrs. Git'tos, Beeson, Murray, Bennett, G. Mullen, J. B. Stubbing, and Professor Walker. On the question being put to the vote the affirmative was declared carried by a majority of one. Mr. L. Phillips was considered the best debater of the evening.
