, MR. SHAW RETURNED. ;. A" SMALL POLL. V; ." \" The. poll for the election of a member of the Auckland City. Council, to fill the vacancy caused by the election, of Mr.-L.' J. Bagnall as Mayor, was taken yesterday, and resulted in the return of Mr. H. Shaw, the Citizens' League nominee, by a. handsome majority. There were in.all four candidates, viz., Messrs. H. Shaw (president of the New Zealand Accountants' Association), E. W. Burton (exchairman of the One-tree Hill Road Board), W. Richardson , (temperance advocate), and T. Harkins (tinsmith). Polling commenced at nine a.m., and from the commencement it was generally recognised that the contest, to all intents and purposes, was between Messrs. Shaw and Burton, and when the results from the various booths came in it was found that Mr. Shaw had polled 1662 votes to Mr. Burton's 828, which gave Mr. Shaw the victory by a two to one majority, with six votes to spare. Air. Richardson polled third, with 318 votes, and Mr. Harkins last, with 201. As the latter candidate failed to secure one-eighth of the total votes polled !:y-the successful candidate, he forfeits his of £3. The poll was not a- heavy one, only 3025 electors, out of 19,332 on the roll, taking the trouble to record their votes. There were 16 informal votes. The arrangements, which were under the control of Mr. T. Ussher, the returnofiicer, were admirably carried out, and the result of the poll was announced at eight o'clock, or only one hour after the poll closed. • ; . • .
