Towns;- With 60s. start, beat his brother Norman, with- 385., by a length. Felton (325.) was a good third. Harry Pearce gave up at : the two and a-half miles post. The winner's; time was 18m. Matterson, *ith 655. start, held "the lead till passing the mile and a-half' post, r when Zeitch (465.) went to the front. .; At the two miles post Zeitch was two lengths to the good. Fogwell (18s.) made a splendid effort to overhaul tho leaders, but-Zeitch won by • a length and-a-half.. A couple of lengths separated the second and third men. ■ J. Arnst started,. but «' was early out .of i the race. The time was 18m. 475.' The third heat proved one' of "the' finest contests seen on the Parramattaj :with '"■'; a sensational finish. Peter Kemp, jun. (605.), overhauled the limit man (Backhouse), who had 100s., before covering half a mile. Tom Kemp (705.) and G. Matterson ' (465.). were close behind. At the mile and a-quarter R. Arnst shot past Backhouse and went in" chase of Matterson, who was now leading from the two Kemps. Just before reaching j the gasworks Arnst electrified the crowd .; by shooting past Laycock, Tom -Kemp/and j Fisher. v A moment later Peter Kemp's i chance was. settled.., At two miles v Arnst was •; level with Sid. Kemp and only; three ; ' lengths astern of Matterson. At two and a-quarter.miles Arust was ahead. He eased up, however, after overhauling Matterson, and was apparently taking a well-earned breather when young Matterson worked a surprise sprint ■' ard before Arnst realised it Matterson was upon' him, A desperate finish resulted in a dead- heat, S. At the Hobart Regatta the championship sculls resulted in a win for McVilly, with .Ivens second, and Priddle third. The eightoared race was won by New South Wales, with Victoria second and Tasmania'third.' ' (Received May 2, 1 a.m.) Hobabt, May 1. New South Wales went to the front at the end of the.quarter mile, and never being headed, won comfortably by three lengths, the time being 15m. 275. McVilly defeated Ivens by two lengths. .
