Mr. H. W. Joynt, of Fiji, Who arrived from Sydney on Sunday, went on to Kotorua yesterday. A deputation is to wait on Mr. P. J. Nerheny .to-day to ask him to contest tho position of Mayor of Auckland. Mr. R. I. Corbett, who returned by the s.s. Morea last Wednesday after a '.up to . England, left for Whangarei lust night. Mr. J. C. Adams, ex-Mayor of Tauranga left by the Wiinmera yesterday ' for Sydney, en route for the Old Country. Mr. A. A. Koch, consulting engineer to the Railway Department, left Auckland by yesterday morning's express far Taumarunui. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Wilson and family left by the express last evening to join the steamer lonic at Wellington en route to England. Mr. 11. Stevenson, of Sydney, was'a passenger from Auckland by tho Wimmera last evening, after spending a holiday in New Zealand. Mr. and Mrs. W. Chesnall, and Miss Chesnall, of Ashburton, who have been on a holiday visit to Auckland, left for Rotorua yesterday. Mr. Harold Beauchamp, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, who is now in Auckland, will return to Wellington by the express to-night. Major A. Hooton, of»4ho Indian Medical Service, and Mr. H. S. Da vies, of Bombay, who arrived by the Morea on Wednesday, left for Tirau yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Trotter, English tourists, are spending a few days in Auckland after a tour of the Dominion. They proceed by the Atua to the Islands. Mr, and Mrs. C. B. Wells, American tourists, have arrived in Auckland, and will spend three weeks in the thermal district. Thev leave for America on May 11. Mr. E. Tregear, Secretary for Labour, who has been in town during the past few days, will probably leave for Wellington "by the Main Trunk express to- , night. 1 ' Mr. W. Chappell, of Puhoi school, who was recommended by the Auckland Education Board for the position of headteacher of the Mayfield school, has been accepted by the committee. Mr. R. S. Briggs, the sitting Mayor of Parnell, has been nominated for re-election at the forthcoming election by Councillors W. Jphns and C. E. Palmer and Messrs. W. Frater and E. W. G. Rathbone., Mr. Fred. G. Roach, of Wellington, who is well known in commercial circles, and who was at one time a member of the Wellington Bowling Club, died on Friday last, after an illness of about 18 months. He was about 45 years of age. At a meeting of the Paeroa Fire Brigade (reports our correspondent) the secretary (Mr. R. Dempsev) was the recipient 'of .a handsome silver cruet, as a present from the members on the occasion of his recent marriage. The presentation was made by Captain Moore, who tendered to Mr. Dempsey the congratulations of the firemen. , ' Mr. W. D. S. Macdonald, M.P. for the Bay of Plenty, who is removing from • Motu, was entertained there by the settlers last Friday evening and presented with a'silver tea /coffee.service as a J mark of appreciation of his services to the district. Mr. Macdonald stated he felt that l he could not do justice to his position as a member of Parliament by . remaining :in Motu, but he hoped to settle in Waikohu' county. /Miss' D. Sturges, "daughter of Mr. A. Sturges, of, Otahuhu, has returned to . New Zealand after an absence of seven years spent in the Old Country. During that time Miss Sturges occupied several .• important positions, being associated for „ several years with the Metropolitan Hospital, 'in London; also a large children's . hospital, and for some time she managed a sanatorium in Scotland. She made a • special study of the subject of economy in % hospital management.' • The • death is announced of an early settler in the person of Mr. J. A. Burt, ™ who" was formerly of the firm of Comrie and Burt, who did business in the build- ' ings below the Old Mill. After a time Mr.- Burt retired, and leased land in Poverty Bay from the Maoris, but during - the massacre there ,he lost ' practically everything. He . then entered business in Wellesley-street and eventually retired and went to Remuera to live. He was secretary to the Epsom School - - Committee, and a member of the One- . tree Hill Road Board for several years.. Mr. Burt, who had reached the advanced age of 82, leaves a wife and one son. v. Mr. John Thompson, formerly of Wellington, died at Castlemaine (Vic.) on Saturday. Deceased, who was for many years a leading merchant in Wellington (says a Press Association , telegram), was '. born near Belfast, Ireland, in 1841, and went to Melbourne in 1864. After spending some time at Castlemaine he engaged in the drapery business in Greymouth. In " 1874 he went to Wellington and joined Mr. G. V. Shannon in establishing a soft goods business in Panama-street, with branches at Auckland, Christchqrch, and Napier. In .1887 Mr. Shannon retired from the firm and two years later Mr. Thompson sold the business. ; Mr. Thompson then left for Castlemaine, where his nephew and he purchased a large foundry ' which had been established by his brothers. For some time past he had been seriously ill, and his death ■ -Was ' not unexpected. . The deceased married in 1884 Miss Lottie Krull, eldest daughter "of Mr. P. A. Krull, the German Consul at Wellington, and she survives him. The . family consists ' of three daughters. • . The deceased took a great interest in racing unci was one of the most active officers of the Wellington Racing Club for many years. As a compliment to him the club ' created the Thompson Handicap, an annual fixture. - • !♦. ,
