SWIMMING.
A. T. Wacldell. late of the Waitemata Swimming Club and City District football Club, who recently left Auckland for Napier, will leave the latter place for England on April 15. The Waitemata Club was unfortunate in having to postpone tho carnical set down for Tuesday evening. There was no Possibility, considering tho wet and cold night, of bringing tho sports off, so the officials wisely decided to hold the function next Wednesday ovening. The weather was bitterly cold, and -swimming was, therefore, qui out of the question. Southern scribes have been writing about tho hotting which is connected with amateurism in Auckland. Reference has been mado to a swimming carnival held here this season, at which one competitor called out to another to take his time. The remark is qualified by a statement "that all this was allowed to pass unchecked by the -officials, etc. In justice to the officials controlling tlie gala in question, it should bo stated that the swimmer's action was not allowed to .pass unchallenged, as he was immediately suspended for the remainder of the carnival. Also, two responsible officials exhaustively inquired into the circumstances of tho case, with a view to proving an infringement of the laws of the game," but, as 110 evidence of fraud or wilful "non-trying" was unearthed, no action could be token.
