UNDER A LOADED WAGGON.
• —,—«<>>_—_—,—•.. ; . A REMARKABLE ESCAPE. \ .. [BY TELEGRATH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ' ,• Gisborne, Tuesday. • A waggoner named Joseph Hoare, driver of a team belonging to Mr. Greaves, of Ngatapa, had a miraculous escape from being killed on the Tahora Road this morning. ' ; He was driving a waggon' loaded with wool, and at a sharp turn, where, apparently, the. leaders had ' not room to get round, the horses and waggon got over •:,• the bank and fell some little distance. .The driver attempted to ; jump clear, : but was caught, and the . waggon and its heavy load came on top of him. Another man who was with Hoare could not hear or see anything of him, and he •was unable to shift the waggon. Hoare 's companion proceeded at once for assistance to the nearest settler's house, about a mile away. Meantime a navvy working on the : road came upon the scene, and as the horses had pulled the waggon a little further downhill Hoare's body was visible. The navvy pulled him out, and it was found that <he had sustained no injury beyond severe bruises and -shaking.':- He was soon able to walk about, and assisted in the recovery of the waggon and its load. Two of the horses were killed.
