Foil some time past development works hnvo been in : progress in tho Bobs' special claim at Whan Whau, on the coast, between Mercury Bay and Jtuaotumij and these aro turning but satisfactorily. The roof has opened out to about'6ft in width, and Rives good prospects by pounding. A trial crushing of ono ton indicates that the ore would bo payable if treated on the ground. It has, therefore, ' been decided to erect a battery of eight head of stampers, with necessary bordans,' to be driven by steam power. The plant was landed on the beach on Saturday last, and its erection will be proceeded with without delay.- > , OLD HAURAKI. • N [by telegraph.—-own COBRESX'O.VDKXT.] \ CoitOMAXDEL, Tuesday. At the 400 ft level of the Old Hauraki mine preparations for rising on the new reef at the point, where tho first gold was struck aro nearing completion. The quartz -and country look promising. At the intermediate level the second stopc was started to-day. Two stopes ar-3 now in progress. The reef is a strong body of ore, showing strong blotches of gold. ■ To-day a start has been made to locate the new reef at the 220 ft level. Preparatory work will occupy some few days. At 250 ft crosscutting operations proved ; the lode to be 54ft in width, separated in the centre by a band of country 10ft wide. ." The south section, which is 28ft wide, carries an average value of sdwt 9gr gold and 2oz lOdwt 19gr silver per ton, and the north section (26ft wide) is- worth sdwt 22ar gold and 4oz "14dwt 15gr silver per ton. Tho discovery of this 'bulge' on the Empire should make an important addition to the or© reserves. Driving both east and west of the 250 ft crosscut,' V the north wall, is now ' in;, progress. East of No. 4 shaft crosseut—The d level has been widened and, heightened for 10ft from 110 ft, to 250 ft east. The manager of the Tokatea Gold Mining Company,- telegraphed yesterday stating that he had cut No. 1 reef. ' .", j NOTES. ; The manager of the Tararu mine reports that in the drive the Vulcan lode is hard and difficult, to break. A breaking down of the reef will take place this week. Water continues to flow very freely from the lode. In the Silver Hill mine the drive to intersect No. : : 4 reef .is in good country. The manager reports that results of assays from the winze overhead gave £10 Is -4d and £2 16s lid, which he considers very satisfactory. The manager of: the Phoenix and Tairua Dreadnought mine reports that the face of the tunnel' is now breaking into a large flinty, rubbly formation, with plenty of iron pyrites showing. Tho total length of the tunnel; i:< 445 ft. - • Tho manager of ' the Moanataiari mine, Thames, reports that a start has been made to drive on the course of the Red Cross leader at the Caledonian No. 3 level, where it passes through the Cambria reef into tho footwall. This leader has yielded good results in the Caledonian mine. , The south drivo inVVthe Blyth low level in the Kuranui mine' has been advanced 6ft in good country, and tho leader, 3in wide, has made fine gold. ' A second stone is being put in on the shaft lode. In the western drive the. leader has split up, and the footwall portion is now being followed as promising tho best results. The drive on McDonald's leader in the Golden Pah mine, Coromanclol, has been extended 7ft, and when breaking down tho lender blotches, of gold have been scon in the stone. On the 17th inst. another leader, about 4in thick, was cut in the drive, and it has a'favourable appearance. The manager intends rising from where he has been getting the blotches and colours of gold. The manager of tho Scandinavian mine reports that vi the drive on the Nightingale reef a small break coming in caused the lode to bo somewhat disturbed. It is now, however, resuming its usual solid form. The quartz broken shows good minerals, and also carries a little gold. The country is good as the drive goes into the hill. Good prospects were obtained on the outcrop of this large reef, which can bo traced for hundreds of feet on the surface. The drive is now in 140 ft. The/south drive on Lowrie's reef is in good country, carrying the best of minerals, and the quartz looks'well. Th*3 drive is now in 84ft. • :/ •During the week the crosscut in the Kirikiri Consolidated mine has been advanced 13ft. On Wednesday the men encountered a hard bar of ground, which came in from tho roof of the drive.' This, savs the manager, may have had tin* effect of checking the lode on its downward continuation, and in all probability it will be found, when this bar is penetrated, to have turned with the hard grounds Tho drive on the main reef has been extended 23ft. The lode has increased lin size, and .how measures.;the full width of the drive, 6ft,. with no sign of the footwnll showing.. The ore body in places looks well, and carries a high percentage of favourable minerals, but has shown no gold ).■
