TRICKY TRENTHAM.

CHAMPION RIFLE MEETING.

VAGARIES OF THE WEATHER.

UNCERTAIN -SCORING/" . 1 ..."•\• >/• '"• ' : V? .*! i TELEGRAPH. —TRESS . ASSOCIATION • * TRENTHAM RIFLE RANGE, Monday. IT would be hard to find a more trying day for shooting than to-day. The Trentham range was at its very worst. " Tricky is but a mild term for the vagaries of the wind - and light that made up the day. To the spectators, of whom there were a number. the range never looked better, the sun shone with a brilliant radiance, the heat being tempered by a refreshing breeze; but all these things were , fatal to good shooting. A mirage,' a tricky wind, a ; kaleidoscopic light, and, in fact, all the weather vagaries except rain, wore joined ; together to upset the equilibrium of the marksman. The result of this was poor scoring. ~ Shooting started at 7.45 with the of the Wellington match and 900 yds of the Otago match, both matches having been left halfcompleted 'on Saturday. ■ -At' 600 yds the highest score was 49, but Ayson (Murihuku) and Grant (Taradale) succeeded in scoring possibles at ,the 900 yds range. There were, however, at each of these ranges a number of 49's. Fisher, the winner of the Wellington match, put on 49 at the 600 yds range, and thus; beat Parslow, Baker, and James on the count. , ■ ** . .1

F. Moyes (Dennistonj won with 94.

In the afternoon the weather became more, uncertain, and the result was much more, unreliable scoring. This was especially the case with, regard to the Australians, none of whom seemed able to grasp the tricks of the range. ' 1 At the close of the Wellington match Frank, .of . Nelson, was - still leading in the aggregate, but the 900 yd s; range was fatal to his chance, and when the Otago match was completed Marshall, of Karori, at one time one of , the most reliable short-range shots in New Zealand, was leading, with King, of Christchurch, close up. The... afternoon's shooting consisted of . the 900 yds range of the Canterbury and the 600 yds of the Auckland, matches..

Shooting was fairly fast,' despite the conditions, and the 900 yds range saw' the .. downfall of many shooting reputations. Several of : the competitors failed at this range to hit the target at: all, while several others only got , into. single figures. * There were no possibles scored,, the best totals' being Dodd (Wellington), Kennedy and A : Smith (Kaitangata).' and Piggott (Australia), each with 49. Kefford > (Australia) and ex-Champion . Chins were among the 48's, with 47's as thick as blackberries. * _ ; At the 600yd8 .range of the Auckland match there were -: again no possibles , and • only a couple 'of 49's, vi*.; Piggott and Kennedy. ; Interest always centres in the shooting by the champion, but this year Duncan, who won the belt in 1909, . has shot with the hardest luck, and at present it looks as though his chance of . repeating , his last year's success is very remote. - V: To-morrow work will consist of service and teams matches, the Canterbury and Auckland matches being completed on Wednesday. ~ -• " : '-.
