The shipment of three, thousand sheep taken from Wellington by the Wanaka for Lyttelton the other day is the first large consignment from the North Island this year. Several shipments have been brought to, Lyttelton from the Sounds by the Alexander and Waimeii,. andifrom the Chathams by the Ripple, but it would appear that importations of North Island sheep to Canterbury this season will be very small as compared with previous years, says the Press. The sheep-carrying season usually starts in January or February, Two years ago over 150,000 sheep from the North were landed in Lyttelton, several large • steamers being regularly engaged in the trade.
