Mr. Fisher (ex-Federal Prime Minister), who opened the Federal Labour campaign! at Maryborough last night, said he was j opposed to wages boards. He urged the necessity for giving greater power to the Federal Parliament to protect workers. He claimed that his Government had been responsible for the initiation of the Australian naval defence scheme,' and were the first to put ; the idea into concrete form. v V; ''-"i The inclusion, of the financial, arrangements with the States in the Constitution would prove embarrassing to the people of Australia, because it would .be impossible , to have a / large revenue from the Customs if they were going to have a really protectionist . , country, and he believed they ■ were. Very high duties would be required to defray the expenses of the federation,' arid the payment of 25s per. capita .to the States. He urged the people to trust the Federal Parliament to. do justice to the States. Tf justice were not the people had the remedy at the next election. \ ';. , ; v'R'y
