A CUSTOMS CASE.

At the Police Court . yesterday, before Messrs. R. Hobbs and H. Schofield, J.P.'s, charges were brought against Samuel Simon Warwick, a dusky visitor to the city, and. a woman whose. name was given as Sarah Warwick, of having uncustomed goods in their possession. Mr. Mays, who appeared- for the prosecution, stated that the matter had since assumed far greater proportions, and at his request the . case was adjourned until tomorrow. • AN OLD OFFENDER. Immediately on his return from Pakatoa on Wednesday last, William Betts celebrated his arrival in the city by getting drunk and using obscene language. The police described the accused as an able-bodied man, who ought to be doing decent work in the country. He was, however, incorrigible, and had been at Pakatoa on two occasions. The accused was convicted and sent to gaol for six months with hard labour. THE BY-LAWS. William A. Sims, for erecting a building in Summer-street, Ponsonby, at a distance of less than 2ft from the adjoining boundary, was fined £5. For permitting, cattle to be at large at One-tree Hill without proper guidance, Alfred E. Goodwin was fined ss, and £2 Is 6d costs. Frank Hall, who committed a breach of the by-law by leaving his vehicle across the road not parallel to the footpath, was fined 10s and 7s costs. William Lowe, who stood in Queenstreet with a stall not in conformity with his license, was convicted and discharged. REMANDED CASES. The case of Martin Saunders, who was charged with breaking his prohibition order on two occasions, was adjourned until to-morrow. 1 , Cyril Cosgrove, who again appeared in answer to two charges of theft, was, at the request of Chief-Detective Marsack, remanded ,to appear at Hamilton., Richard Polkinghorn was arrested on warrant for failing to comply with a maintenance order. ■ The case was adjourned till Tuesday next. 1 DRUNKENNESS. Two first offenders were convicted and fined 5s for drunkenness, while'a third was. remanded for a week, in order that he might receive, medical treatment. Cassie Caulton, for drunkenness in Rutlandstreet, was fined £3, or in default seven days. Horace Lane, until recently second steward on a steamer,; was fined £1 for disorderly conduct while in a state of intoxication. An old offender named Percy Smith was charged with 'being drunk at Ponsonby and assaulting the arresting constable. He was sent to gaol for three months with hard labour. ASSAULT CASE. A charge against John McCabe, of indecently assaulting a woman, was reduced' to one of aggravated assault. To this the accused pleaded guilty, and was fined £10 and £3 Is 6d costs. •
