ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOOTBALL. THE RUGBY CONFERENCE. Jx local Rugby Union circles considerable surprise is expressed at the fact that. in selecting representatives to proceed to Sydney to take part in the coming conference as to proposed improvements in the game, the New Zealand Rugby Union has ignored the claims of Auckland and Otago. This is considered all the more strange seeing that the two unions named were the prominent parties In bringing about the conference. It is felt that, in appointing Mr. George Mason, of Christchurch, to represent the South Island the New Zealand Union has overlooked the fact that the Canterbury Union took little part in bringing about the conference. The Auckland Union not unreasonably expected to be represented, and great disappointment is evinced at the selection made, leaving them out in the cold. LAWN TENNIS. • NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Austral Wheel Race resulted Pianta 1, Harris. 2, Glencross 3. Won by four lengths. Time, 4ni. 47 l-ss. . ' 8 BOXING. JEFFRIES V. JOHNSON. Jeffries is going to right Johnson because he doe* not wish to see a negro hofd the championship of the pugilistic world (says an American exchange). If Ketchel ha"d been able to dispose i of the present title-holder in their recent battle, ' it is practically certain that Jeffries would have retired to his California!) ranch for good, us the money that he made out of his theatrical exhibitions previous to going abroad, would have proved ample to keep him comfortably for the rest of his life. Jeffries has said himself that in none of his fight* has he ever hit a man with all his power, and there are many persons who have watched him box who will aver to the truth of this. " This negro is not being credited for ,what he has done" (said John L. Sullivan in New York recently). ' Neither is he given credit for being us good a fighter as he is. I Chink that, when . he meets ' Jeff.,' the black boy will beat, 'him* ! to a frazzle. lam a great admirer of ' Jell.,' • and would be one of the first to bewail the fact v that a negro claims the championship, but I fear that 'Jeff.' is not the man he was five years ago, ' and that he will be unable to cope with this i wily Zulu. I don't like negroes any better than > I did 20 years ago, but in this case I think credit must be given to the better man, and I ' look upon Johnson as being the fighter of the day."
