ALLEGED ASSAULT.

WOMAN BADLY WOUNDED.

Wellington, Friday. The police to-day received information of an assault on a woman which occurred on Tuesday, the result being the arrest of a man named David Bates. It is alleged that Bates attacked a woman named Mrs. Sheehan with a table-knife, inflicting two wounds in her thigh, and also causing" bruises in several parts of her body, and blackening her eyes. The knife is said to have been broken in the fray. Mrs. Sheehan is now in the hospital. Another woman, who intervened, is said to have been also struck several blows.

Towards the end of last week (writes our Huntly correspondent) two of the tennis courts at Huntly were abandoned to a large swarm of bees which chose the central net post as their favoured location. In spite- of several attempts made to oust them, they kept possession, till Sunday last. That they objected to being disturbed was proved by their attack upon the caretaker, who was forced to leave the roller after being stung'several times.
